Volunteer Job Descriptions

Non-Certified Positions

Summer league swimming requires commitment from both swimmers and parents. Meet officials are required at both home and away meets. MRA families are required to work at least one half of each meet their swimmer is participating in, or their swimmer may be ineligible to compete. For families with multiple swimmers, an additional half may be assigned as needed, and if required (parents may rotate).

Timers – Excellent first job for new families and a job that allows workers to see the meet from the very best spot. This job requires pressing a button to record a swimmer’s finishing time. No cell phones are permitted while timing. There are three (3) timers in each lane that record the time on a stopwatch. One timer will record the time on the heat sheet and hand it to the runner for pick up.

Head Timer: Will ensure all timers are in their place and assign one timer per lane to record times on the swimmer's card. The Head Timer will also start 2 watches as a "back-up timer", in case a timer has a problem with their stopwatch.

Table Worker: Work at the administration table. All the swimmer's cards with official times are sorted at the table and eventually entered into the computer. The ribbons are also prepared at the table, by placing swimmer stickers on the ribbons and filing by team. At MRA, Table workers enjoy working in the AC, and can briefly step away from their position to watch their swimmer swim. Table worker can have small children or infants with them during their volunteer shift.

Runner: Two people per half collect timer sheets and deliver them to the table workers, collect DQ cards and deliver them to the Referee to sign and then take them to the table workers, and collect final printed results to post for everyone to view.

Clerk Helper: Helps the Clerk of Course organize swimmers by event/heat and keep them in order as they approach the blocks.

Computer Assistant: Assists the computer coordinator with duties, such as time and DQ results into the computer file

Announcer: Calls swimmers to the Clerk of Course and makes all other announcements required during the meet.

False Start Rope Holder: Stands at the rope line, and drops the rope into the water after the Starter signals a false start, to prevent the swimmer from going any further.

Greeter/ Swimmer Sign-in: Checks in swimmers upon arrival, provides card with events and may provide general direction for visiting team on where to set up. Cards not collected due to swimmers absence are turned into the Computer Rep and may be removed from the meet.

Heat Winner Ribbons: Stands at the end of the event, and hands out heat winner ribbons/prize to the first swimmer to finish.

Raffle Salesperson: Sale 50/50 raffle tickets at home meets, where one lucky winner will receive 50% of sales and swim team receives 50% as fundraising for gear, equipment and activities.

CERTIFIED POSITIONS

Strokes/Turn Judge (Certified): Stands on the side of the pool watching the swimmers in his/her assigned lanes. If the swimmer does not execute the stroke in accordance with designated strokes and turns for the event, the Strokes/Turn judge will disqualify the swimmer by raising his/her arm when an infraction is seen. Four or more qualified adults shall serve as Strokes & Turns Judges at all regular season meets.

Clerk of Course (Certified): Clerk is responsible for seeding all the heats and events according to official GRAL rules. As events are called, workers are needed to assist in moving children through the clerk area to the starting blocks.

Starter (Certified): Signals the start of each event and heat. Electronic light and sound starters will be used.

Head Table worker (Trained): Table workers receive the Timer event/lane sheets from the runners and process the information through posting of results. Tasks may include receiving and sorting Timer event/lane sheets, computer input reports, labeling ribbons, DQ envelopes, and posting results and scores.

Referee (Certified): Referee must remain on deck throughout the course of the meet and must signal the Starter that the competition can begin before each meet. Referee reviews all Strokes and Turns calls, and has the final say in all disputes, including full authority and responsibility for the conduct of the competition. Referee must have a thorough knowledge of all certified positions.

Head Computer Rep: Updates the roster of swimmers, prepares reports needed by GRAL, enters each swimmer's events into the computer prior to the meet and generates the cards needed for the meet. During the meet, the swimmer's times are entered into the computer as the meet progresses and prints meet results at the end of the meet. This individual is required to oversee the accurate entry of meet information, export all files as required, and make appropriate backups.
